Legend Valley Country Club – Rose Course
Ninh Binh, Vietnam · Rated 4.5/5 · From $105–$0
About
Legend Valley Country Club lies in Nguyen Uy Ward, Ninh Binh Province, about an hour's drive south of Hanoi. Its two 18-hole courses, the Rose Course and the Canyon Course, were both designed by Nicklaus Design on the site of a former quarry, among towering limestone mountains, with fairways winding through the valleys and past its lakes. The Rose Course opened in June 2023 and is the club's original layout. Water comes into play on 13 of its 18 holes, and some 2,400 metres of dry-stacked stone walls, built from boulders found on the site, frame the fairways. Its par 3s at the fourth, sixth, eleventh and fifteenth are among the holes to remember. In its first three years it hosted around 120 tournaments. There is a driving range, pitching and chipping areas and a putting green for pre-round practice, and caddies are available for every round. The clubhouse overlooks the 18th green, a place to relax after the game.

Hole 1 · Par 4
A straight par 4 played from tees set behind a small pond, which the back tees carry. Bunkers sit on both sides of the fairway, with trees along each edge and sand short and left of the green.
The pond is only a short carry, so pick a line between the fairway bunkers.
Hole 2 · Par 4
A dogleg right with a lake down the right side. From the back tees the drive crosses the lake's edge. Bunkers sit at the corner and down the left of the green.
Aim down the left half of the fairway so the lake stays out of play on the drive.
Hole 3 · Par 5
A long par 5 that opens with a drive over the corner of a lake on the right. A wide fairway leads to two separate greens, both ringed by bunkers, with sandy waste ground along each side.
Check which green is in use before you plan your lay-up.
Hole 4 · Par 3
A short hole with a large lake down the right side and a small pond left of the back tee. The green has bunkers on the left side and behind it.
Favour the left half of the green; anything that drifts right finds the lake.
Hole 5 · Par 4
A straight par 4 from tees set among water, so the back tees carry a channel. A lake runs down the right of the fairway, with bunkers on both sides and one short-right of the green.
Keep the drive left of centre, away from the lake and the bunker beside it.
Hole 6 · Par 3
A short hole with a lake running down the left side to the front-left of the green. Bunkers sit on the right and back of the green, with one at the front-left.
Aim at the right half of the green; the water takes anything pulled left.
Hole 7 · Par 4
The drive carries the corner of a lake on the left. The fairway then bends gently left to the green, with bunkers on both sides of the approach.
Take a line right of the lake; the more you cut off, the longer the carry.
Hole 8 · Par 4
The drive crosses a lake on the left at an angle onto a fairway that bends gently left. Bunkers sit on both sides of the landing area and guard the front of the green.
Take only as much of the lake as you can carry comfortably; the right side is the safer line.
Hole 9 · Par 5
A long par 5 with water and trees down the whole left side. It turns right at the end to a green set beside a lake, with bunkers short of it and on the right.
Lay up to the left side of the corner for a short, open pitch to the green.
Hole 10 · Par 4
A gently bending par 4 with water along the entire left side and a creek just in front of the tees. One bunker sits on the right of the fairway and bunkers guard the left of the green.
Drive towards the right-centre; the whole left side is water.
Hole 11 · Par 3
A par 3 played entirely over a lake to a green on a point of land beyond the water. The green has bunkers on both sides and the lake wraps around its front.
Take enough club to carry the water; short of the green is wet.
Hole 12 · Par 5
A long par 5 with a rock outcrop on the left and trees down the right. A pond edged with stone walls sits in front of the green, with a bunker in the second landing area.
Lay up short of the pond so you have a full wedge over it.
Hole 13 · Par 4
A straight par 4 with water right of the tees and a rock outcrop down the left. Bunkers sit on the right of the landing area and round the back-left of the green.
Aim the drive just left of centre to avoid the right-side bunkers.
Hole 14 · Par 4
A dogleg right with water along the whole right side, including beside the green. Bunkers sit on the inside of the corner and down the left of the green.
Drive to the left side of the corner, then approach away from the water.
Hole 15 · Par 3
A par 3 played over a lake with stone-walled edges to a green beyond the water. A bunker sits short and right of the green.
Club up; the whole shot is over water and short finishes wet.
Hole 16 · Par 4
The drive crosses water in front of the tees, with more water along the left of the fairway. The approach bends left over a creek to the green, with bunkers on the right of the fairway.
Leave a full approach shot; the creek in front of the green catches anything short.
Hole 17 · Par 5
A long par 5 with a winding lake on the left that the back tees carry. Bunkers sit on the right of the fairway, and the green tucks right at the end with bunkers on its left.
Lay up to the right-centre to keep the lake out of the second shot.
Hole 18 · Par 4
The tees sit among water, so the opening shot crosses a pond. A lake runs down the right to the green, with bunkers on both sides of the fairway and one right of the green.
Favour the left side all the way in; the lake guards the right.
