Greg Norman

Gregory John Norman was born on February 10, 1955, in Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia. He became hooked on golf at age 15 after serving as a caddie for his mother, and he has said his first golf instruction came through Jack Nicklaus’ book, Golf My Way. At 20, he was working as a trainee at Royal Queensland Golf Club, earning $28 per week. His experience playing many of the world’s great golf courses over a 25-year career served as a catalyst for his interest in golf course design. In 1976, at age 21, Norman turned professional and won his first professional event, the West Lakes Classic, in the same year. He was a two-time British Open champion, winning in 1986 at Turnberry and in 1993 at Royal St. George’s. Norman held the No. 1 World Ranking for 331 weeks, won 91 professional events worldwide, including 20 on the PGA TOUR, joined The European Tour in 1977, won the Volvo Order of Merit in 1982, and won 14 tournaments on The European Tour International Schedule. He was also the first player in Tour history to surpass $10 million in career earnings, and he served as Presidents Cup captain of the International Team in 2009 and 2011. Greg Norman Golf Course Design was established in 1987. The practice has a portfolio of 140 courses across 36 countries and six continents, and is based at 19940 Mona Road Suite #3, Jupiter, FL 33469, USA. Chris Campbell is the executive leader of the firm’s global design business. The practice was named 2023 Golf Course Designer of the Year by the World Golf Awards. Courses designed by Norman include Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colorado; Doonbeg Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland; Jumeirah Golf Estates (Earth) in Dubai, U.A.E.; El Camaleón at the Mayakoba Resort in Quintana Roo, Mexico; and Shark’s Tooth Golf Course in Lake Powell, Florida. Norman has said he is a big fan of green complexes where the ball gets taken away from the hole location. He has also said, “I always make my bunkers gather just like links course bunkers gather the ball.”
