Schmidt-Curley Design

The history of Schmidt-Curley Design dates back to 1984, when Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley both worked for Landmark Land Company in La Quinta, California. Curley was raised in Pebble Beach, California, and graduated in 1982 from the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo School of Architecture. Before returning to Landmark in 1988, he worked for golf architect Ron Fream for two years. Schmidt is a native of Carmel, Indiana, and graduated from Purdue University in 1970 with a major in Agronomy. After graduation, he began working for Pete Dye, where he was a Design Associate for seven years, then spent seven years with Nicklaus Design as a Senior Design Associate. Schmidt-Curley Design was formed in 1998 following Brian Curley’s buy-out of the Landmark Golf Company Design division. Lee Schmidt has since retired from Schmidt-Curley Design, and the company is now owned and managed by Brian Curley. Schmidt-Curley Design produced over 50 completed courses in China alone. The firm was named #1 Golf Course Architect in Asia-Pacific 7 Years Running by Asian Golf for 2011-2017, was named Architects of the Year by Golf Magazine in 2011, and was ranked #4 Most Influential Golf Course Architect by Golf Inc. in 2011. Brian Curley has experience in master planning, designing, and construction of over 150 courses. Courses associated with the firm include Bali Hai Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, designed by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley in 2000; Oak Quarry Golf Club in Jurupa Valley, California, designed by Dr. Gil Morgan and Schmidt-Curley Design; the 2007 renovation of Siam Country Club Old Course near Pattaya, Thailand; and Siam Country Club Rolling Hills in Pattaya, Thailand. Brian Curley has said that courses by designers who learned with Pete Dye share commonality in terms of angles and how they are set up. He has also said that he wanted one Mission Hills Haikou course to have few fairway bunkers, with largely tree-lined, wide turf areas.
